Etymology

'Udel 's ford,' Udel being a diminutive of the recorded Uda .The ford was at Uttlesford Bridge in Wendens Ambo infra 543, and the moot was held at the neighbouring Mutlow Hill infra 543. The hundred was formerly divided into East and West, the last notice of which is in 1321 (Pat). v. also EAS xvi, 183 ff. and xviii, 188.
