Historical Forms

  • Spencers ib.

Etymology

is Spencers ib. According to Wright ( i , 530 ) the mansion was erected by a daughter of Charles Spencer , earl of Sunderland , and granddaughter of the first duke of Marlborough . This was the 3rd earl ( c. 1674 – 1722 ) whose wife Anne died in 1769 ( Complete Peerage ii , 13 ) . For the origin of this name we must therefore look to an earlier owner .
