Etymology

is so named in 1828 Langd . It was a coal and lime wharf on the river Hull . Steer (Cu, NRY) is used of ' a landing-place ' and is a dialectal form of stæð , as in the local pronunciation of Staithes (PN NRY 139) as [ stiəz ] .
