Etymology

Named from Eggardon Hill, the prominent Iron-Age hillfort lying partly in Powerstock and partly in Askerswell, v. the entry in that par. infra for further early spellings and etymology. In the GeldR form, the spelling of the second letter (i ), which is superscribed and interlined above and between the g and the o , follows Ekwall DEPN, Fägersten 237, cf. Hutch3 4 lv, VCHDo 3 127, ThornDB Appendix where the reading is given as Glochresdone .
