Etymology

, Stib (b )erd Bridge , Stib (b )erd Lane , Stebbard 1607DROMap , Stipick ' Bridge 1698Bundy , Stiffeck [ bridge ] 1791 Boswell , Stibbicks (Mdw )1838TA ; the earliest forms suggest that this name may be analogous with Stibbard Nf for which Ekwall Studies 2 163 – 4 proposed derivation from stīg ' path ' and *byrde ' border, bank ' ; a track from the village runs S along the bank of a tributary of R . Lydden and here joins another track to cross the stream , so that ' bank with a path on it ' would be an appropriate description .
