Etymology

, cf. ModE roadstead ' a place where ships may conveniently or safely lie at anchor near the shore ' ; the term is no doubt applied figuratively here , since the farm lies some ⅔ mile from the coast and close to the village ( ' inhabitedby fishermen and sailors ' in 1774 Hutch1 1325 ) .
