Lazencastle Wood

Other OS name in the Parish of Carlatton

Etymology

( 6 ″ ) . Cf. Leyson Castle 1589ExchKR , Laysin Castle 1603Gilsland , Lasen Castle 1613 CW xx , Lazon Castle 1710 Map . The first element is probably leysingr , ' freedman ' ( infra 219 ) , perhaps used here as a personal name . There is no historical explanation of the word castle in this name , but it is possible that the hill summit in Lazencastle Wood may have been the site of an early fortification .
