Etymology

( lost ) , Chanuez hall in Wixsterston 1530 Orm2 iii489, Chayne Hall (in Wixstaston )c.1557–8ib 490, Cheynye Halle 1590 Sheaf (in Beam St.), Cheyney Hall 1590Orm2, Cheney Hall (Barn )1788, 1797 Sheaf , ' hall of the Cheyney (Chanu ) family ' , v. hall , bere-ærn . This family were lords of Wisterson 42 infra . The location of this house is doubtful . Whereas the earlier references put it in Beam St. supra , the later ones ( Sheaf11344, 361 ) place it near Love Lane and Barker St. supra . It is likely that the Love Lane site was that of a barn belonging to Cheney Hall , and that the hall itself , although in Nantwich township , was part of Wisterson manor .
