Etymology

( 109–266810 ) , v. hlid-geat ' a swing-gate ' , cf. Lediate Hay , Lidiate Gutter 1849TA ( 109–260812 ) , v. (ge)hæg , goter . In 1930 , Sheaf 3 27 ( 6086 ) mentions a stream ' anciently called Scarbrook or Lidiate Gutter ' , from Heswall Common to R . Dee at 109 – 253813 , ' recently called Bloody Brook or Bloody Gutter from the red colour of the sand carried down in spate ' and suggests this as the origin of a local name Bloody Dyke . Scarbrook would be ' brook at a bluff orscar ' , v. scar , sker , broc . The name appears in the f.n. Scarbrook 1849TA , ( 109–258817 ) .
