Etymology

This is possibly a compound of the ordinary word lath and bury (v. burh ), the reference being to some feature of the structure of the burh . The variant forms of the name would agree well with this suggested etymology, for the word lath itself has forms latte and latthe in ME, the relationship of which to one another is a matter of difficulty. v. NED s.v.
