Etymology
OE Hogges -tūn , 'Hogg's farm.' This pers. name is not found apart from p.n., as here and in Hoxton (Mx). Its existence is supported by the appearance of a weak form *Hocga , which lies behind Hockliffe (Beds). It is apparently the ordinary word hog (OE hogg ). It is possibly more than a coincidence that the next parish but one to the west is Hogshaw, cf. Introd. xx.The forms with -uston point to preservation of the syllabic force of the e till the end of the 14th cent. at least but no trace of such a pronunciation can be found now.
