Etymology

'Stony ford', cf. Stanford Dingley Pt 1270–1. A poor form for this name occurs in the phrase æt sandfordinga gemære 931 (c. 1200) BCS 683. The ford was probably a crossing-place on Frogmore Brook at the N. end of the village.
