Etymology
'Island where peas grow', v. pise , peosu , īeg , ēg . The second el. possibly refers to the low headland between two streams on the S. edge of which the village lies. Several parish-names in this part of the Ock valley have this second el., cf. Charney 389, Goosey 411, Hanney 477, and Introd.
