Etymology

, cf. Le Hassoke Mede , Hassokk Mede , Hassockemede Hassokefelde 1547LRMB . There are several copses with this name in Berks , and EDD records that in this county hassock is used of ' a wood usually of Scotch firs with much coarserank grass ' . NED gives a quot . from 1814 ' The down is entirely spotted with small islets ( the country people call them hassocks ) of low trees and luxuriant underwood ' . In f. ns . in other counties the word seems to mean ' a tuft of coarse grass ' , v. hassuc .
