Early-attested site in the Parish of Trowbridge

Historical Forms

  • Cochulle 1303 GDR
  • Cockhill 1632 WIpm
  • Cockell House 1773 AandD

Etymology

Cock Hill (6″) and Cockhill Fm are Cochulle 1303GDR , Cockhill 1632 WIpm, Cockell House 1773 A and D. Ekwall (DEPN s. n. Cock Beck) connects this and other examples of cock hill with a lost OE  *cocc , 'hillock,' found in haycock and various place-names. The cock hills are too numerous for us to explain them from the bird name, which is only very rarely found in place-names.
