Etymology

Inappropriate though such a compound may seem at first sight, it is probable that this name means what it says and is descriptive of a hill where sedge grows. Sedgehill, it should be noted, is the name of a district and not of any precise village or hamlet, and the whole of the parish is remarkable for its many pools and small streams, even in the higher ground in the south of the parish. Whitemarsh Fm infra is on some of the highest ground in the parish.
