Ed 1 RegMalm, 1249 FF, Cockeleberewe 1289Ass , Kokkelbergh 1301 Ipm, Cokkeberwe 1332SR . Aubrey (NH 45) notes that the rough stone about Chippenham, especially at Cockleborough, is full of petrified cockles. Hence perhaps 'cockle-hill,' v. beorg . Otherwise, 'corn-cockle hill' (E.J.S.).
