Etymology

The forms now available render untenable Ekwall's suggestion (DEPN) of an OE  personal name Gamela as the source of the first element. The form must be Gumela , presumably a derivative of the personal name Guma found in Gumber (PN Sx 97) and Gomshall (PN Sr 248). Hence 'Gumela 's hill,' v. dun .
