Etymology

Stop Beacon and Fm (6″) is Stoppe 1249Ass , 1373 AD ii, 1459 IpmR, Stopp 1467MinAcct , c. 1500 ECP, 1630 WIpm. It is impossible as between the beacon and the farm to know just where the stoppe was from which the places take their name.There is an OE  stoppa , 'pail,' with which the name may ultimately be associated.
