Etymology

Salterton is Saltertun 1199 P, Salterton (e )1298 Ipm, 1310 Cl, 1393 IpmR, Saltreton (e )1289Ass , Salterne 1332SR , Psalterton 1641 NQ vii. This is from OE  sealtera -tūn , 'salt-workers' farm.' Cf. Woodbury Salterton (PN D 602). It is difficult to conceive what the salters were doing here with their salterne or salt- houses.
