Etymology

From ON  hváll 'an isolated rounded hill'; the hill is the prominent one between Whale village and Lowther, from which the name gets its occasional affix in Louthrewhale , etc. On the forms v. Phonol. §§2, 20. Cf. also Whale Beck, etc. (infra ).
