Etymology
Brougham Hall, 1611FF , 1698 PR, 1811EnclA , ('Brougham Hall called till lately the Birds Nest ') 1787 Clarke 6, v. hall and on the history of the hall v. NWm 286; it probably replaced a more ancient house called domus de Bruhame 1272 Misc 143, which was in a state of deterioration; the former name Birds Nest (1802 DW) contains nest which was often used of dwellings, cf. Crow Nest (YW ii, 186); it is possibly identical with the tenement of Thomas Burde 1586BrmUC , and is named from the local family of Birde , Burde (1586–1656BrmUC passim ).
