Etymology

'Reedy headland', v. hrēod , nes 2 . The word nes is used of other places in the district to denote a piece of land (not necessarily high) around which a river flows in a semicircular sweep; cf. Cotness YE 250, Fockerby Ness, Haldenby Ness, Ousefleet Ness 5, 6, 8supra .
