Etymology

Maspin Moor, (mora de ) Merkesfen 1222–37, 1255 Selby, 1320 Ext, 1321AddCh 45815, Merkeffen 1320 Selby, Maspin (Moor )1796EnclA 76. 'Fen on the boundary', v. mearc , fenn . It is near the parish boundary, but may allude to some older boundary (as, for example, that of Elmet, cf. 1supra ). The later development is a curious one.
