Historical Forms

  • Denaby Rage 1771 M
  • Rage Field 1841 TA
  • Ryach 1487 Hnti,396

Etymology

Denaby Rage, Denaby Rage 1771 M, Rage Field 1841TA , probably identical with Ryach 1487 Hnt i, 396; the etymology is obscure, but since Denaby Rage is on the top of a steep bank it might possibly be from rǣc 'reach' in the rare and obsolete sense 'headland' (NED s.v. reach sb.) or one of its other applications 'a stretch of meadow', etc. (EDD s.v. reach vb. § 9); it has in any case been influenced by the common word rage .
