Etymology

This is possibly 'rose-hip valley', as Ekwall suggests, or 'bramble valley', v. hēope , hēopa , denu , with early voicing of -p - to -b - before -d - as in some of the very early spellings of Skibeden 73supra and the later ones of Hebden Bridge iii, 188supra .
