Etymology

Cowloughton, Collhagton 1279–81 QW, Collington 1598 FF, Cold Acton 1729 PRKld. This p.n. probably has no connexion with Cowling, as it stands on another hill-side on the opposite side of the valley to Cowling Hill. It is probably 'cold, exposed garden', v. cald , lēac-tūn.
