Etymology

Huddersfield has a similar run of spellings for the first el. to Hothersall La 145, Hudereshal 1199, 1201, Hudersale , Hodersale 1212, 1251, and for both an OE  pers.n. Hud (d )er has been suggested; this would be a derivative of the OE  pers.n. H d (a ) with an -r suffix (cf. Doddershall Bk 110, Wo xxiii). But in view of the single 1241 Huddredisfeld spelling it seems probable that in Huddersfield at least we have to deal with an OE  pers.n. Hudrǣd . This name is not recorded; the theme H d - is found but once in a dithematic pers.n. (in OE  Hudeman BCS 1130, which Forssner 156 thinks is from OG  Hutuman ); the suffix -rǣd , -rēd is common. Such a pers.n. could be reduced to Hudres - from an early date, and parallels to the reduction will be found in Adderstone Nb 2 (Edredeston 1233, Edreston 1234, from Ēadrǣd ), Alfrick Wo 28 (Alcredeswike 1204, Alfrewike 1275 from Alhrǣd ), Atherstone Wa 77, Lundsford Sx  456 (Lundres -, Lundes - with a single Lundredisford , from an unrecorded OE  Lundrǣd , which presents problems very similar to those of Hudrǣd ), etc. 'Hudræd's piece of open country', v. feld . The spelling -fend is AN (v. IPN 113).On the later dial. forms with Huther - cf. Phonol. § 41.
