Etymology

Fountains Scale (lost), Founteynstallis (sic for Founteynscallis )1400 YI, Fontanscale 1457 FountBurs, Fontance scale 1496FountRent , 1618YAS Dd 104, Funtance scall '1580Skp 24, Funtance scale 1635YAS Dd 104, Fountains Scale 1716 ib 100. 'Shieling(s) belonging to Fountains abbey', v. Fountains v, 191supra , skáli ; it was in the Craven sheep pastures of Fountains, and though its precise location is not known the YAS references make it clear that it was in Horton.
