Historical Forms

  • Diggendike(s) 1676,1680 PRHmp

Etymology

Dicken Dike, Diggendike (s )1676, 1680 PRHmp, v. dīc 'ditch'. The first el. in this name, Dicken Syke i, 114, Diggin Dike i, 38, Dicken Dike v, 74supra is uncertain; it could be the rare e.ModE  dicken , some kind of water-bird (NED), but more probably it is a variant of dial. duggen , pa.part. of dig 'dig', to some extent confused with dike 'to ditch'.
