Etymology

Cleatop, Clithopriding e. 13Sawl 105, Clethop 13 Percy, 1298BltComp 39d, Cletop (p )1365 Percy, 1400–65 Pat (freq ), Cleitopp 1530, 1560 NCWills, Cleotop 1615 FF, Claytopp 1648 WillY. Cleatop is in a small recess in the hill-side below the very steep declivity of Cleatop Park. It is therefore 'small valley near the cliff', v. kléttr , hop .
