Etymology

Gilthwaites, Gulnetwayt 1389 YD vi, 65, Gilthwait (es )1771, 1817 M, Gilfit 1843 O.S., v. þveit ; the first el. is obscure, but Gulne - might stand for Gulue -, possibly for the ON  pers.n. Gylfi , which though chiefly in mythological use occurs in Norw  p.ns. Gjølstad , Gullerød and possibly in OSwed p.ns. (cf. LindN 430).
