Etymology

Stanhill (lost), (capella de ) Stanhil (l )12 (1311) Ch, 1154–81 YCh vi, a. 1181, c. 1204Drax 1d, 13 DodsN, 1536MinAcct , Stannels 1840TA 135. 'Stone hill', v. stān , hyll . The site, as shown by the TA reference (field 598–612), is ¼ mile south-east of Scurff Hall (1″ O.S. 97–695259). This is the site of the chapel of St Wilfrid which has completely disappeared though embankments enclosing the site are shown on the 6″ O.S. (237 NW, SW), and scattered traces of building material and late Roman and medieval shards have been observed (v. F. T. Wainwright, YAJ xxxviii, 398–402).
