Etymology

The first el. could be ON  kjóss 'creek, valley', but since this would make a tautological compound with OE  denu 'valley' it is probably OE  cēse 'cheese' (with initial k - due to ON influence as in Keswick iv, 184supra ). The name would mean 'valley producing cheese'.
