Etymology

v. burh 'fortification'. The affix Wallis is the name (le Waleys , etc.) of an important family here from the twelfth century and after (1185 Templar 134, 1246Ass 22d, 1283 Ch, 1328 FF 209, etc.).Their name occurs also in some of the early forms of Newton (Ledsham) pt. iv infra .
