Etymology

Spen Fm & Spen Common, Spen de Gunecroft 12Nost 82, Munkehaid spen 12 ib 89d, Munckehayespen 1175–90 YCh 1026, Munkehaithespen 1240Nost 81d, Spen Close 1844TA . v. spenne 'span' and Spen iii, 21supra . Spen Fm is on the end of a headland and on the track of a Roman road. For Gunecroft v. f.ns. infra , and for Munkehaid cf. Monk Hay 108infra . Spen Fm is by the Great North Road and Monk Hay some distance away on the south side of Bramham Park; the identification of Munkehaid spen with Spen Fm is not altogether certain, but Monk Hay probably covered a fairly extensive area.
