Historical Forms

  • Craʒanley 13 YDi
  • Croadingley 1851 TA

Etymology

Crodingley, Craʒanley 13 YD i, Croadingley 1851TA ; the earlier spelling is probably a misreading of or stands for Craþan -; this el. would appear to be ME  craþayn 'a craven' (Gawayn 1773), later crat (h )on , crayon (NED s.v.) and NCy dial. cradden 'a coward, a dwarf' (as in Craddin Holes 283supra ). The latter also has the form crawdon [krɔ:dən] in YW, and in Scots  use it has been associated with crow-down 'to crow or cry down', v. lēah .
