Etymology

Cowthwaite Plain, Cu (d )ford 1086 DB, Cusforth l. 13 Kirkst, Cusseford 1303 Aid, Cufford 1428 FA, Cufford Nook 1848TA , Cufforth House 1711 PRAb, Cufforth Plain 1848TA , possibly Cow Bridg 1778 PRGf.The location of Cufforth is fixed by the TA map as 1″ O.S. 97–4239.The forms are somewhat uncertain as the Cus -, Cusse - spellings might in fact be more correctly Cuf -, Cuffe -. In view of the DB spelling, an OE  pers.n. Cūða or its derivative Cūðsa (cf. Cusworth i, 65supra ) is most probably the first el. v. ford . Cowthwaite is a modern adaptation.
