Etymology

The first element is uncertain but it may be the OE  word scīete , related to sceat, denoting 'nook, corner,' discussed under Cockshoot (PN Wo 180), Heyshott (PN Sx 22), Shute (PN D 184). Hence 'stump in the corner of land.' Alternatively we might with Ritter (125) take the first element to be the same pers. name Scytta which is found in Shuttington supra 24.
