Martimow

Early-attested site in the Parish of Radway

Historical Forms

  • Merclemere c.1265 Magdalen

Etymology

Martimow (field-name) is probably identical with Merclemere c. 1265Magdalen , the mercna mere of BCS 1234. It lies on the western boundary of the parish where it marches with Kineton, the bounds of which are defined in BCS 1234. Radway is in the diocese of Coventry-Lichfield, while Kineton is in the diocese of Worcester, the boundary between the two bishoprics corresponding to the boundary between the Mierce or Mercians and the Hwicce (cf. PN Wo Introd. xvi, n. 1).
