Etymology

Bond Gate (6″) is le Bondende 1392 AD v, le Bondynd 1466, le Bondyende 1480 AD i, the Bondend , le Bound ende 1544Aston .Cf. also Bondcroft 1472Aston . The forms are late but the first element is probably the ME  bonde from ON  bondi and the name refers to a quarter of the town where the 'bonds' or churls lived, cf. St John Street in Peterborough (PN Nth 225) and Introd. xxiii.
