Etymology

Potford Dam is Portford c. 1150Pipewell , 13th AD ii, Petford 1540 Monast, Potesford Damme 1546 LP. Cf. le Portford (13th) in Alvaston (Db). The ford is over a tiny feeder of the Avon, on the road from Rugby which joins the main road across Dunsmore Heath at Blue Boar Fm. This is an old road, for it is marked on the map of Knightlow Hundred in the 1729 edition of Dugdale. It may have been an old portway . Cf. supra 9.
