Etymology

Hawkhurst Moor is le Hauekerismore 1275, le Hauekesmore 1303, Hauekaresmore 1307Add , le Hauekermor , le Haukerismor 1315 Ipm, Hawkersmore 1553LRMB , Hawkersmoor c. 1830 O.S. This is probably 'moor or marsh of the hawker' or 'of a man named Hawker,' cf. Hawkerland (PN D 587). For the modern form cf. PN Sr xxv.
