Etymology

Sole End Fm is Soulege 1086 DB, Sauleg 1221 FF, Souley End , Soule End 1656 Dugdale, and gave name to Thomas de Souleye (1247Ass ) and William de Souleye (1332 SR). As the place lies beside the Sowe (supra 5) the first element is probably that river-name, v. leah . “Within the precincts thereof (i.e. Astley) is the head of Sow , of which Brook there is a member of this Lordship that hath its name, viz. Souley now scarce taken notice of but by a few scattering houses, called Souley-end ” (Dugdale 69).
