Etymology

Crowmere is Cromemare 1597Wisbech Map , Cromere (Common )1821 Baker. Near by was Crommedych 1306Ct , Cromedich 1380Sewers , Crome dike 1438 Imb. It would seem that the names must be related but the relationship is obscure. The natural interpretation of Cromedich would be 'winding ditch,' v. crumb , dīc . Near by there is marked on the Wisbech Map a Currymare , going back to Curemere 1251ElyCouch , Coremere 1340 Imb, of obscure origin. We may perhaps compare the West Country river-name Cory, Curry (RN 97–8).
