Etymology

Broadhurst is Bredehurst 1256 FF, Brethurst 1296, 1327 SR, Bredhurst 1327, 1332 SR (all p). This is probably 'hyrstby the brede or broad expanse of land,' referring perhaps to the flat valley of the Rother at this point, v. Brede infra 514.
