Etymology

The Oaks. This was formerly known as Lambert 's Oaks (1749 B) from the family of Lambert , settled in the parish in the 14th century. At the end of the 18th century the house was used as a hunting and racing box by the owner, the Earl of Derby, and the famous sweepstakes whence the 'Derby' and 'Oaks' originated were founded here (VCH iv, 247).
