Etymology

St George's Hill is Saynt George his hill 1609LRMB , Sct Georg Hill 1610 Speed. It was earlier known simply as le Bery 1337 AD iii, or Oldebury 1548LRMB . Cf. also Berylane , Beryhawe 1491, 1503Deed and Burwood supra 96. The earlier name had reference to the large earthwork here, v. burh .
