Etymology

This is possibly 'ham(m) of the people of Wāðsige .' Ekwall (PN in -ing 130) first suggested that the first element might contain a personal name derived from OE  wāð , 'hunting,' for which he adduced Germanic parallels Waido , Weidheri , Weitleicus and Weidimar (Förstemann, PN 1494) from OGer  waid .The survival of the second consonant in the later SR form tends to confirm this.
