Etymology

The prefix Bere is explained by reference to Nicholas le Bere VCH v, 176.

Perhaps 'the dry or barren hill', v. sēar , dūn , one of Ekwall's alternative suggestions (DEPN), or 'Searu's hill', from the OE  pers.n. *Searu . For a discussion of the relation of the hill-name Saredon and that of Saredon Brook, v. supra 17.
